Phoebe Boswell (b. 1982) was born in Kenya to a Kikuyu Kenyan mother and a British-born Kenyan father. she grew up in the Middle East and moved to London in 2000. She graduated from the Slade School of Art with a BA in Fine Art Painting, and later went on to study 2D Character Animation at Central St Martins College of Art. Boswell had her first solo exhibition at the Bahrain National Museum with a portraiture and oral history project entitled Bahrainona and has exhibited at, among others, the Royal Academy, Bonhams Bond Street and the Mall Galleries, as well as creating moving image installations at the Old Vic Tunnels and 500 Dollars, London. Recent exhibitions include What About Africa? at Witteveen Visual Art Centre, Amsterdam (2016), The Lizards Within Us at FourFOLD Enclave, London (2015), Interchange Junctions at 5 Howick Place, London (2014), and The Matter of Memory at Carroll/Fletcher Gallery, London (2014). Boswell has created animations for 12foot6, Wingspan Productions, Springshot Productions and BBC4, and her animation work has been nominated for numerous awards including Best Animation at Rushes Soho Shorts and Best Film twice in the British Animation Awards Public Choice. Shortlisted for the Art Foundation's Animation Fellowship and the first recipient of the Sky Academy Arts Scholarship in 2012, residencies include the Blå Stället and GIBCA Residencies, both in Konstepidemin, Gothenburg, and the Florence Trust, London (all 2015). In the same year, Boswell gave a talk as part of the Disseminating Identities Symposium at the Victoria & Albert Museum. Forthcoming projects in 2016 include solo show at Circle Arts, Nairobi and an exhibition at the Biennale of the Moving Image, Geneva. Boswell lives and works in London.
