Jeanne Gaigher (b. 1990) in Cape Town, South Africa where she currently lives and works. Now a featured South African Post War & Contemporary artist, Gaigher holds a Fine Arts degree from the University of Stellenbosch. The artist explores the evocative possibilities of materials and their unique textures by using a mixture of fabrics, gauze, painting, and drawing to build her works. Moving between figuration and abstraction, Gaigher tests the boundaries of a canvas by attaching layers of semi-transparent painted scrim to create an illusion of three dimensionality. By staging the female body as the protagonist in most of her pieces, she aims to represent the tensions between the human body and its surrounding context– alluding to situations of transition and metamorphosis. Gaigher held her first solo show in 2015 at SMITH gallery in Cape Town, South Africa and has been represented in notable exhibitions and international art fair presentations ever since.
Solo exhibitions include Anatomy Lesson, Wschod, Warsaw, Poland (2022); Sing into my mouth, Osart Gallery, Milan, Italy (2021); ‘Tango’, SMAC Art Gallery, Stellenbosch, South Africa (2021); ‘Century's View’ , SMITH, Cape Town, South Africa (2018); SMITH at FNB JoburgArtFair, Johannesburg, South Africa (2018); 50TY/50YT at Investec Cape Town Art Fair, Cape Town, South Africa (2018); SMITH at Investec Cape Town Art Fair, Cape Town, South Africa (2018); SMITH at Cape Town Art Fair, Cape Town, South Africa (2017);Also Known As Africa Art Fair, Paris, France (2016); ‘Club’ , SMITH, Cape Town, South Africa (2015); FNB Joburg Art Fair, Johannesburg, South Africa (2015).
