With Sophia we were once invited to a party organized by Hermès in New York. A group of young men and women came during the evening. They were very stylish and had an incredible "swag" which made them pop out from the crowd which was very "posh". Sophia pointed me to a young man and a young woman in this group. The man wore an amazing shiny reflective coat and the woman had a silk scarf around her head, a bomber jacket with embroidered animals and long socks on her legs. She had a piercing gaze and looked very confident. The coat of the young man reminded me of an armor and I had the idea to transpose this contemporary knight in a modern reinterpretation of the myth of Saint George and the princess Theodora. The painting "Saint George and the Dragon" by Paolo Ucello is one of my favorites and I used it as my main inspiration.
In my painting I reversed the two figures. Saint George is wearing a silver coat and is now standing on the left side looking in the direction of the princess. Behind him, is the cave of the dragon. Princess Theodora is on the right side where used to be the knight. Monsoon clouds inspired by Indian miniatures are present behind her. The horse of the knight is embroidered on her bomber jacket and she wears a golden tank top. The Dragon has almost disappeared, his wing is painted as an abstract element on the curtain in the background. The two protagonists look as if they were standing on a theater stage. The Platinum and Gold leaf work in the diptychon was made by Sophia Andreotti.
