This work is both an abundant form that brings to mind Henry Moore’s depth of forms, but it is also a reflection on Jean Arp’s Déméter which was rendered in fluid, nurturing curves. In Greek mythology Demeter was also the embodiment of maternal attachment, resilience and implacability in the care and defense of her offspring. In my version, the goddess’s daughter, the sculpture is both mother and daughter but also a symbol of pedagogical feminine lineage.
Richard Stone says: “In this new work, ‘the goddess’s daughter, I’ve created an abundant form. It is a reflection on ‘Jean Arp’s Déméter’, rendered in fluid, nurturing curves. In Greek mythology Demeter was the embodiment of maternal attachment, resilience and implacability in the care and defense of her offspring. My sculpture is both mother and daughter, but also a symbol of the potency of feminine lineage.
