In Jamaica aloe vera is called ‘sinkle bible’ because it seen as a cure all (a bible for the body!). This plant is also known as ‘Barbados aloe’ because it was grown extensively on plantations in Barbados for export. Hans Sloane in his Natural History of Jamaica vol.1, 1707 refers to it as such, and the plant was used both in Barbados and Jamaica to treat burns, for wound healing and as a purgative. In Cuba the plant, known as Sabila, is closely connected to the Yemaya the Yoruba deity of the sea in the Cuban La Regla de Ocha-Ifá (Santeria) tradition
