Death and the Maiden was a common allegorical motif in Northern Renaissance art and usually features a young woman being embraced by a skeleton representing death. This version is a mixture of that and a contemporary memento mori, with the young woman dressed in a skeleton print top and red tracksuit bottoms, is surrounded by contemporary signifiers of status and desire - Coffee cup and paper bag, vape pen, iphone and socks and slippers. Death’s skull is cradled on her lap in a reversal of the historical trope if Death as the assailant. The Maiden in my sculpture is resting on a rock and she could be a mythical monster, akin to a Harpy, who has lured a mortal to his death.

Death and the Maiden (Der Tod und das Mädchen in German) was a common motif in Renaissance art, especially in German painting and printmaking. The usual form shows just two figures, with a young woman being seized by a personification of Death, often shown as a skeleton. Variants may include other figures. It developed from the Danse Macabre with an added erotic subtext.
