This regal warrior explores indigenous knowledge that African people had around the healing properties of ginger. The plant known as ‘common ginger’ (zingiber officinale) and was introduced to Jamaica during it’s early colonial occupation in 1525. Widely used as folk medicine, African people in the Caribbean adapted the knowledge they had of another species in the same family Siphonochilus aethiopicus in order to unlock the healing properties of common ginger. Many plants would have been carried as protective talismans of which ginger is one of them.
