I was walking with Sophia at night in a street in Los Angeles. Behind exotic plants and palm trees was an illuminated entrance hall of a building that caught our attention. The reflections of the street lights on the glass doors and the mirrors inside the building created an almost psychedelic effect. I thought it would be a perfect stage for a painting. I wanted to continue on the theme of the saints after the diptych on "Goerge and Theodora". The reflections of the lights on the glass door looked, for me, like arrows and I thought it would be perfect for a contemporary interpretation of the classical figure in the history of art of Saint Sebastian. In this painting I wanted to create different reading levels. At first glance you can see an elegant man waiting in an entrance hall. Is he waiting for someone or does he want to get inside the building? He is standing in between two worlds, between the inside and the outside. He seems to not really fit in any of those two places and has an almost melancolic gaze in his eyes. Above the central figure is a roof which is inspired by the wall paintings motifs at the Amber fort in Jaipur in India. When looking more carefully you can discover among the geometrical motifs mysterious symbols and objects which are more or less related with the figure of Saint Sebastian (a bow and a arrow, the pierced figure of the saint, eyes, hands, etc.).
