This series of six paintings draws on the swan as a spiritual symbol of transformation (as seen through a Jungian lens), purity (as seen in Christian art), desire (as seen through the Greek myths ‘Leda and the Swan’), as well as a messenger from the Otherworld (as seen in Celtic stories). Spirals appear as recurring motifs, evoking the cyclical nature of individuation and the inward journey toward the Self. Swans glide across different bodies of water, serving as carriers between the conscious (air) and unconscious (water) realms. Angels emerge at several points the series of works — some serene, others caught in tension — one even tempted by the apple (making reference to the forbidden fruit from the Tree of Knowledge), symbolizing the themes of desire and temptation as often evoked through many religions, namely Christianity. The overall narrative is one which uses the swan as a symbol to reflect the concept of duality: water and sky, conscious and unconscious states of the human experience, as well as our collective experience between the earthly and the divine.
