The artist selected 35 expired passports from regions of the world where Britain had commercial interests at the time the portraits in this room were painted. The Iranian passport was her grandmother’s. Sokhanvari left Iran as a teenager, remaining in the UK after the outbreak of the 1979 Iranian Revolution. Her work addresses themes of displacement and national identity. She creates passport stamps using “sexist and generally problematic” slogans from old adverts, reappropriating them in a satirical and humorous way.
"Passport photographs offer an alternative way of thinking about the portrait in the context of the history of art.” - Soheila Sokhanvari
"Leave to Remain” can be seen in Gallery 1 of Tate Britain, curated by Kira Wainstein.
