Ruprecht von Kaufmann is internationally renowned for his paintings on linoleum. For many years, he has also used stencils made of polyester film, which ultimately remain as visible traces of the painting process. Distorted and twisted, pinned to the wall in his studio, their shadows inspired him to use them as a medium to transfer the painting into space: Interwoven and arranged on wooden and wire frames, people and animals emerge, and the brushstrokes on the film appear as if they are floating in open space – painting in the air, whereby form slowly emerges stroke by stroke. For the first time, an exhibition is devoted entirely to these sculptural works. Ruprecht von Kaufmann studied painting and illustration at the ArtCenter College of Design in Pasadena, California. His works are represented in numerous international exhibitions and collections.
