Lulu Bennett

Lulu Bennett (b. 1995) graduated from Glasgow School of Art in 2017 and Slade School of Fine Art in 2021. Her painting practice draws together fragments and figures from across history to explore the intersection of personal and broader cultural histories. Through exploring the politics of the personal, Bennett’s project thus far is a reaction against a post-Brexit neo-colonial British government. Having grown up in Lancaster, Bennett also seeks to redress the lack of rich representation of the north in a London-centric art world and situates her work as part of a contemporary revival of the northern Gothic.

Lulu Bennett's work can be found in the Easton Capital Collection. Furthermore, Lulu Bennet has been shortlisted for the John Moores Painting Prize in 2023 as well as the inaugural East London Art Price 2022. In 2021, Lulu Bennet received the Chadwell Award; In 2019, she was awarded the Bloomsbury Festival art prize as well as the Slade Print Fair Scholarship. In 2018 she also received Stevenston Award for a Painter of Merit, RSA New Contemporaries.

Kimathi Mafafo

Kimathi Mafafo (b. 1984) is a multidisciplinary artist whose practice ranges from embroidery and oil painting to installation. Mafafo obtained a National Diploma in Fine Arts from the College of Cape Town in 2007 and a National Diploma in Film and Video from the Cape Peninsula University of Technology in 2016. Born in the semi-arid Kimberley in the Northern Cape of South Africa, Mafafo questions historical stereotypes around gender inequality in Africa. She primarily focuses on celebrating the black female and abstracted forms placing them in often verdant imaging, characterised by lush greenery and sensuous drapery that are far removed from the dusty mining town where she grew up. She has recently organized a group of Capetonian woman into an informal traditional embroidery society.

Richard Stone

Richard Stone (b. 1974) is a London-based artist who received his MA from Central Saint Martins. Further classically trained through a scholarship and apprenticeships in Italy, including through the tutelage of Helaine Blumenfeld OBE, Stone was also recently cited in the Financial Times as a ‘rising star'. Each of Stone’s works are an arrested moment between stillness and movement and together form a unique perspective on the world - from exploring masculinity in historic sculpture through to the sensuality of form and colour in sculpture as painting. His sculptural forms in particular capture the liminal space between figuration and abstraction, whilst articulating the continued relevance of beauty in classical materials.

Highlights and collections

Stone’s works can be found in prominent collections in the UK, Europe and the United States. In 2023, he was awarded the Brit List Award from Hotel Designs for his commission by the historic Old War Office in Westminster London, which includes the landmark development of Raffles London. He has been published alongside leading artists including Vija Celmins, Kris Martin and Gabriel Orozco and has exhibited with Matt Collishaw, Derek Jarman and Michael Raedecker. Stone has been awarded and shortlisted for numerous awards and residencies, including Art Council England Grant for the Arts, the Brian Mercer Bronze Scholarship and Residency, and the Threadneedle Prize for Painting and Sculpture.

Rufai Zakari

Rufai Zakari (b.1990) is based between Accra and Bawku, Ghana. He completed his apprenticeship under Mozzay, a senior artist in Nima, Accra. In 2011, Rufai Zakari graduated from the Ghanatta College of Art and Design. In his work, Zakari examines consumerism, environmental pollution, labour, trade, and the perils of industrialization in contemporary Ghanian Society. The founder of Rujab Eco-Art Foundation in his hometown of Bawku, Zakari bases his practice on the recycling of waste in the streets of Ghana. After decades of tribal conflict which took countless lives and left the city in ruins, Zakari is now looking to the future with optimism and a strong ambition to rebuild what has been lost, while inspiring hope in his community.
