Gabriela Girletti

Gabriela Giroletti (b. 1982) is a Brazilian painter, living and working in London. In 2018, she received her MFA in Painting (distinction) from the UCL, Slade School of Fine Art, where she held a position as an Honorary Research Fellow from 2019-2020. In 2015, Giroletti graduated with a BA in Fine Arts (first class) from the Middlesex University, London. In her work, Gabriela Giroletti explores the relationship between the painted image (the meaning, the immaterial, the metaphor, the mind) and the material presence in the painting (the corporeal, the touch, the physical presence, the body). Deliberately ambiguous, the paintings fluctuate between their crude materiality and their metaphysical aspect, encouraging the viewer to formulate peculiar connections with our tangible surroundings, as well as with individual and unique lived experience.

Alexandra Searle

Alexandra Searle (b. 1992, England) is a London-based sculptor. After studying Fine Art at Newcastle University graduating in 2015, she went on to complete an MFA in Fine Art Sculpture from the Slade School of Fine Art in 2019 where she was awarded the Nancy Balfour Scholarship and the Henriques Scholarship Prize. Drawing on references to the medical and the mental from her own experiences with anxiety and hypochondria, Searle manipulates and exploits the behaviour of materials in order to physically depict moments of stress, tension and expectation. Her works expose familiar fragilities and aim to dig into the soft tissue of the materials she uses.

Rabia S. Akhtar

Rabia S. Akhtar is a Karachi based visual artist and writer. She received her BFA from the Indus Valley School of Art and Architecture in 2015, with a focus on traditional Miniature painting. Within her practice, Rabia examines the conflict between anthropocentric thought and dreams of otherworldly animal kingdoms, centering her narratives around the intimate misconceptions of childhood memory and fantasy. Growing up in a vastly polluted megalopolis, with little physical access to animals, Akhtar’s first interaction with the non-human world was through fables, garish cartoons, sensual treasuries, and folk tales. Stripped from their environment, these beings created a distorted realm of solace. With age, the crisis of climate change shattered these worlds, as species went extinct and migratory journeys were severed. The artist revisits the ecosystems of these places: otherworldly plants and beasts of memory, cavort with creatures now extinct or endangered.
