Growth of the Soil, a group exhibition at Kristin Hjellegjerde Gallery, is a love song to nature, to living slowly, peaceably and generously, in harmony with the seasons and elements. Titled after Nobel Prize-winning author Knut Hamsun’s novel, which follows a man’s journey to build a homestead in rural Norway, the exhibition invites artists to explore themes of sustainability, simplicity, and respect for the environment. Drawing inspiration from rural communities that have long lived symbiotically with nature, Growth of the Soil offers a space to imagine how we can heal and restore our relationship with the earth, both now and in the future.

Bunmi Agusto

Bunmi Agusto (b. 1999, Nigeria) is an artist, writer, curator and art historian focused on fantasy and magical storytelling, especially from a West African perspective. Her practices are informed by her upbringing in Lagos, Nigeria. She is of Yoruba, Edo and Afro-Brazilian descent. Her mixed-media artworks combine painting, drawing and printmaking to depict otherworldly landscapes merged with geometric compositions that draw from West African aesthetics embedded in her cultural consciousness. Collectively, her work is narratively informed by a paracosm — an alternate reality in the artist’s mind named ‘Within’ with braided terrains. This world reflects the artist’s interiority and is a site to explore psychology, cultural theory and the evolution of selfhood through the lens of fantasy. Within functions as a repository for all people, objects and theories the artist encounters in her waking life as she creates fantastical retellings of her lived experiences as well as the unseen mechanics of the metaphysical forces around us. Therefore, each work of hers acts as a story panel in an intricate ever-expanding narrative.

Grgur Akrap

Grgur Akrap (b. 1988, Zagreb, Croatia) graduated in painting from the Academy of Fine Arts, University of Zagreb, in 2013. His work explores the power of color as both a symbolic and emotional language, expressing universal human experiences as well as personal, psychological states. His paintings often blend the visible with the imagined, creating a contrast between what feels real and what makes logical sense.

Alexander Appleby

Alexander Appleby (b.1995, UK) is a director and artist who reimagines the landscapes of Northern England through carefully constructed scenes. His work blends smooth, stylized depictions of trees, mountains, and plants with vivid colours and textures that highlight nature’s uniqueness. Drawing on both real and fictional sources, Appleby fuses elements from digital media and painting to create surreal vistas. In recent work, mechanical plants and layered ridges evoke classic video game aesthetics while conveying a sense of vastness. His paintings explore the tension between natural beauty and subtle disruption, offering self-contained moments of disorientation and wonder.

Serena Caulfield

Serena Caulfield (b. 1985, Ireland) graduated from the Gorey School of Art with a BA in Fine arts in 2006, Wexford Campus School of Art and Design in 2007, and Norwich University of the Arts in 2009 where she received her MA in Fine arts. Serena uses painting to make memories and imagery morph into narratives. Her focus in painting is linking the old with the new, the past with the present, and absence to presence. She likes to paint quickly and think slowly.

Emma Critchley

Emma Critchley (b. 1980) is a British artist whose interdisciplinary practice spans photography, film, sound, and installation. A Royal College of Art alumna, she explores the human relationship with the underwater environment as a deeply political, philosophical, and environmental space. Through homogeneous staging, framing, and lighting, she emphasizes the uniqueness of her subjects’ intimate, social, and existential worlds, often examining themes of climate change, environmental degradation, and humanity’s impact on nature.

Emma Critchley has received wide recognition for her work, including being a finalist for the UK/RAINE Award (Firtash Foundation and Saatchi Gallery, 2015), the Saatchi Gallery Motion Photography Prize (2014), and The Salon Art Prize (2012). She was the winner of the Royal College of Art’s RCA Sustain: Moving Minds award (2011), and a finalist for New Sensations by the Saatchi Gallery and Channel 4 (2011). Critchley has been selected for numerous prestigious residencies, including Fresh Milk (Barbados, 2016), NARS Foundation (New York, 2015), AIRX (Singapore, 2012), and the National Trust Bucks Mills Residency (2014). Nelleke Cloosterman

Nelleke Cloosterman (b. 1996, Wuustwezel, Belgium) lives and works in London, UK. Having completed a bachelor’s degree in visual arts and a Master’s degree in Fine Arts from KASK, BE, Cloosterman completed a postgraduate in Fine Arts at HISK, Ghent, BE. Cloosterman explores identity, female representation, and the coexistence of different belief systems, woven together through the lens of symbolism and personal history. Nelleke Cloosterman's paintings appear at first glance in the Vanitas fashion, still lifes of flowers, birds, fruit and candles, 17th-century imagery of expensive worldly possessions. But across the works are a series of small rebellions that manipulate the model of the Vanitas. Void-like settings, usually a non-descript room with the suggestion of a boundary, a wall, a curtain, an end, are opened up by Cloosterman. Walls become endless skies and dense forests, expanding the scope of the paintings across worlds. Here, multiple realities seem to exist, exchanged in thin layers of oil paint. This activates the objects in the paintings; birds are uncaged, flying wingless against an expanse of blue.

Slimen Elkamel

Slimen Elkamel (b. 1983, Tunisia) studied at the Higher Institute of Fine Arts in Tunis, where he shaped his literary and intellectual background into a distinctive artistic practice. Rooted in daily writing, poetic, improvised, or reflective, his work draws from childhood memories and rural storytelling traditions. Navigating the space between reality and imagination, El Kamel creates layered, surreal compositions that transform everyday media into a constellation of visual narratives—less about recounting events than evoking a continuous festival of stories.

Marie-Anita Gaube

Marie-Anita Gaube (b. 1986, France) began painting after receiving a scholarship to the Centro Nacional de las Artes in Mexico in 2010-2011, and she graduated from the École nationale des Beaux-Arts de Lyon in 2012. Drawn early on to figurative painting, she has since developed a practice centered on large, vibrant canvases filled with detail, immersing viewers in lush, surreal landscapes. Her Edenic scenes, filled with exotic flora, waterfalls, and sun loungers, combine joyful imagery with an underlying sense of unease.

Santiago Giralda

Santiago Giralda (b. 1980) is a Spanish artist whose paintings draw from art history and notably landscape painting, while also incorporating new technologies and viewpoints derived from our increasingly digitalised world. An alumna of the Pratt Institute, he begins his working process by photographing different places in cities to observe how the urban context has transformed and adapted the natural landscape. He composes images on the computer and then edits these by interspersing them with additional material he finds online, thus melding the seen, personal memory with those drawn from outside sources. The result plays with the collective unconscious – the notion that we have a collective memory bank populated by instincts as well as universal symbols - archetypal images such as the shadow, the tower, water and the tree of life.

Lotte Keijzer

Lotte Keijzer (b. 1983 in Texel, Netherlands), born and raised on one of the picturesque Wadden Islands in the north of Holland, learned to observe, appreciate, and reimagine the world around her from an early age. Studying Graphic Design at Grafisch Lyceum Amsterdam and Production Design at The Dutch Film and Television Academy (NFTA), further affected her outlook on life and informed the way she paints. Over the years, the Haarlem-based artist developed a visual language that focuses on conveying a sense of physicality using her paintings as visual metaphors for personal reflections on daily affairs, snapshots of moments one might have lived through but didn’t give much attention to. Inclined to underline the imagery with humor and work with bold, alternated, vibrant colors, she's showing the determination not to take herself, or anything for that matter, too seriously. By zooming in on daily annoyances (depending on the kind of person you are), Keijzer exposes the irrelevance of such affairs while poking at the underlying spoiledness of the self-obsessed Western society.

Maciej Kość

Maciej Kość (b. 2001, Poland) lives and works in London. A graduate of Edinburgh College of Art, he is currently completing his studies at the Royal College of Art. Working in mixed media—primarily acrylic (via airbrush) and pastel on linen or wood—Kość often incorporates sculptural elements like polystyrene and found objects. His practice blends influences from classical painting, Baroque, and Mannerism to postmodern maximalism and children's book illustration. He draws inspiration from 19th-century landscape painters, Pre-Raphaelites, and artists like Peter Doig, Walton Ford, and Thomas Woodruff. Combining these diverse references, Kość creates a distinct visual language that hints at burlesque epics and fables while remaining rooted in a contemporary, personal style.

Hans Ragnar Mathisen

Hans Ragnar Mathisen (b. 1945, Norway) is a renowned Sámi multi-artist, both a visual artist and a writer. Also known as Keviselie, Mathisen, stands as one of Sápmi's most iconic multi-disciplinary artists and activists. Born just after the war, he faced immense challenges early in life. Fuelled by a passionate commitment to revive the Sámi culture and language that had been stripped from him, he dedicated his life to artistic and activist endeavours aimed at preserving and revitalizing Sámi heritage. His journey took him across the globe, forging connections and solidarity with other Indigenous peoples. Within the Sámi community, among curators and historians, Mathisen is celebrated as a superstar and a recent recipient of several prestigious awards, though his remarkable contributions remain largely unknown beyond Sápmi.

Lester Rodríguez

Lester Rodríguez (b. 1984, Tegucigalpa, Honduras) holds a Master’s degree in Fine Arts from the National School of Fine Arts in Honduras and a Bachelor’s degree in Social Sciences from the National Pedagogical University Francisco Morazán, where he also completed studies in Higher Education Teaching. His practice spans painting, video, photography, installation, and sculpture, grounded in an interdisciplinary approach that investigates themes of politics, territory, migration, and labor. Rodríguez is a committed educator and researcher, co-founder of the Experimental School of Art, and has worked extensively on arts-based pedagogical projects in high-risk communities.

Atalanta Xanthe

Atalanta Xanthe (b. 1996) grew up in the UK and New Mexico, USA, and now lives and works in London. Xanthe received her Undergraduate at University of Oxford, Ruskin School of Art (2014-2016) and her Postgraduate MFA: New York Academy of Art (2016-2018). On graduating, at 21, she became the New York Academy of Art’s youngest Fellow (2018-2019). Xanthe’s practice is a vivid blend of fantastical surrealism and theatrical storytelling, where nature and artifice collide in painterly dramas that stretch the boundaries of narrative and logic. Rooted in drawing and enriched by references ranging from ancient manuscripts to popular culture, her feminist approach reclaims the grandeur of History Painting with a distinctive, mischievous flair.

Xanthe is featured in the permanent collections of the Ruth Borchard Collection, UK and the Marval Collection, Italy.
