‘Symposium’, a group exhibition at Kristin Hjellegjerde Gallery, West Palm Beach, explores the potential of food and eating as cultural, political, and artistic activity. In ancient Greece, a symposium was a gathering for feasting, drinking, conversation, music, dance, poetry, and entertainment – events held to mark a particular occasion, achievement, or life event. In this show, contemporary artists reimagine the symposium through the lens of their own cultures and identities. What does the modern dinner party represent today? Can it still offer a platform for serious discussion, philosophical thought, and radical exchange as well as indulgence, pleasure and transgression?

Maha Ahmed

Maha Ahmed (b. 1989, Pakistan) completed a MA in Fine Art at Central Saint Martins School of Art, London on the Caspian Art Foundation Scholarship (2015) and a BFA in Miniature Painting at the National College of Arts, Lahore (2012). Ahmed has lived and worked in Lahore, London, Tokyo and is currently based in Dubai. Drawing on feelings of isolation and wonder, Ahmed’s intricate, otherworldly visions of fantastical creatures and distant worlds offer a poignant refection on her personal feelings of unfamiliarity during a period of living and working in Tokyo. Ahmed dreams up imaginary worlds in which her characters - often mythical or hybrid creatures - are in some way at odds with their surroundings. Her works draw inspiration from traditional Persian and Mughal manuscripts and classical Japanese painting techniques.

Highlights and Collections

Ahmed was finalist for the Sovereign Asian Art Prize (2023) . Ahmed has also received special commendation for her work by Dentons Art Prize judging panel leading to an acquisition by the David Roberts Art Foundation Collection (DRAF). Maha's work can be found in the A.R.M holding art collection in Dubai.
Amy Dury

Amy Dury (b. 1971, London) is a British artist who studied BA Printmaking at the Glasgow School of Art (1993–97) and completed an MA in Fine Art at the University of Brighton (2000–02). Working primarily in oil and acrylic, alongside drawing and mixed media, Dury explores figurative subjects drawn from found photographs and home movies of the pre-digital era. Her practice reflects on memory, nostalgia, and social dynamics, reinterpreting imagery from the 1970s and 1980s to examine identity, power, and collective history. Combining her background in printmaking with expressive, layered brushwork, she constructs compositions that merge precise detail with gestural freedom. Through this process, Dury investigates how personal and cultural memories shape contemporary life.

Amy Dury was shortlisted for the Cass Art Prize (2024) and the BP Portrait Award (2020). A Guest Presenter on Sky Arts’ Artists Masterclasses and Judge for the Sussex Portrait Artist of the Year (2025), Dury has also appeared on Sky Portrait Artist of the Year (2021) and created a livestream portrait for Tate.
Falk Gernegroß

Falk Gernegroß (b. 1973, Marienburg, Germany) is a Leipzig-based artist that paints scenes from the calm before the storm, scenes of innocence and open-ended possibility. The artist establishes a rich tension between stillness and simmering forward motion, pausing each character just before they commit themselves to a more determined or narratively compelling form of action. In this arrested state, fantasy reigns supreme.

Sabrina Bockler

Sabrina Bockler  (b. 1987, USA) is a New York–based artist who received her BFA from Parsons School of Design in 2011. Bockler reimagines the domestic sphere through lush, surreal paintings that recall 17th-century Dutch still lifes. Her work draws from artists like Balthasar van der Ast and Rachel Ruysch, but adds a surreal, Lynchian twist that transforms familiar imagery into something both alluring and uncanny. With meticulous detail and painterly flair, Bockler explores the tension between abundance, beauty, and unease, creating decadent tableaux that both seduce and disturb.

Juan de la Rica

Juan de la Rica (b. 1979) is a Spanish painter based in Bilbao whose work balances a dense, introspective quality with the lightness and irony of Pop Art, echoing artists like Alex Katz and David Hockney. He emphasizes drawing as the foundation of painting, describing it as essential to his process, and attributes the melancholy in his work to intuitive creation rather than intention. His subjects—humans, animals, gods, and landscapes—combine depth and vivid colour, creating a continuous interplay between complexity and the playful, ironic tone of his figures.

Adrian Kay Wong

Adrian Kay Wong (b. 1991, San Francisco, CA) is a visual artist currently living and working in Los Angeles, CA. He was born and raised in the east San Francisco Bay area and received his Bachelors in Fine Art from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2013. Wong depicts subtle narratives and interactions from the seemingly incidental moments of the everyday, interwoven with his own memories, story, and cultural identity. Characterized by domestic interiors, motifs from daily life, and casts of light and shadow, his paintings balance an exchange of abstraction and representation, surface and depth, and organic and geometric form. In these vignettes of extended moments, Wong examines the coexisting dualities, intimacy and estrangement, transience and permanence, and belonging and isolation, underlying our daily experiences.

Rabia Farooqui

Rabia Farooqui (b. 1992) is a visual artist based in Karachi, Pakistan. She received her BFA from the Indus Valley School of Art and Architecture, Karachi in 2015. Working mainly with the technique of gouache on wasli, Rabia Farooqui's practice explores the complexities of human relationships through playful, theatrical and colourful compositions. By anonymising her subjects, the artist purposefully draws our attention not only to the physical interactions taking place, but also to wider notions of performance, authority and vulnerability, blurring the distinctions between emotional states, movement and stillness, conscious and unconscious worlds.

Farooqui was nominated for Sovereign Asian Art Prize in 2020. In April 2018, she participated in the artist residency at Zaratan-Arte Contemporanea in Lisbon, Portugal where she exhibited her work by the end of the residency program. Similarly, in March 2017 Farooqui was selected to represent Pakistan in an artist residency by the name of Green Olive Arts, Morocco where she took part in an open studio event along with seven other international artists.
Heidi Ukkonen

Heidi Ukkonen (b. 1979, Bilbao, Spain) is a painter based in Antwerp, Belgium. She studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Art Antwerp, where she earned both her Bachelor and Master of Fine Arts in Painting. Ukkonen’s work often moves between intimacy and theatricality, blending personal symbolism with references to myth, ritual, and popular culture. Her paintings are expressive, vibrant, and psychologically charged, offering scenes that feel both staged and emotionally immediate.

Nicholas Bono Kennedy

Nicholas Bono Kennedy (b. 1992, Birmingham, AL) is an artist based in Los Angeles. His paintings explore the relationship of lived environments and our ability as humans to alter and control those spaces. Inspired by everyday life and what the artist observes in private and public environments. At the core of Kennedyʼs practice are formal concerns such as color, light and pattern, these shape the artistʼs densely populated scenes. Mostly, though, Kennedy simply loves painting.

Tuan Vu

Tuan Vu was born in Saigon, Vietnam, and is currently based in Quebec. A self-taught artist, Vu's creative practice spans drawing, painting, and photography, with a particular emphasis on exploring colour to convey emotions and narratives. His work often features women within vibrant tropical landscapes, drawing inspiration from the Parisian artist group Les Nabis as well as the flattened planes of traditional woodblock Japanese prints. Vu employs a unique process of layering colour directly on canvas, creating dreamlike compositions filled with rich textures and intriguing patterns. His art invites viewers into mystical worlds where beauty and imperfection coexist, aiming to evoke joy and a sense of peace amid life’s challenges.

Hynek Martinec

Hynek Martinec (b. 1980, Broumov, Czech Republic) lives and works in London, UK. Martinec studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague, where he mastered traditional painting methods, and later at Middlesex University in London. He further developed his artistic language at The Cooper Union in New York, deepening his engagement with contemporary theory and gaining an international perspective. Martinec is known for his innovative fusion of classical painting techniques with conceptual and experimental approaches with his works highlighting themes of time, memory, and perception, often navigating the intersections of art history, science, and philosophy.

Claire Partington

Claire Partington (b. 1973), lives and works in London is best known for her large-scale ceramic figures and installations. After studying sculpture at Central Saint Martins in the 1990’s she moved away from making art to pursue a career in the museums and galleries that had initially inspired her interest in art and design, notably working at the V&A museum, the British Library, and the Wellcome Collection. Following a change of career a decade later, she returned to making and attended ceramics classes at night school, where she began to make illustrative and narrative figurative works that draw on her interests in art and social history, mixed with a contemporary social commentary and sense of the surreal.

Kelechi Charles Nwaneri

Kelechi Charles Nwaneri (b.1994, Nigerian) is a self-taught mixed-media artist. He currently lives and works in Lagos state, Nigeria. Nwaneri obtained his Bachelor's degree in Agricultural Extension from the University of Nigeria in 2015. Kelechi Nwaneri focuses on discussing issues around mental health, psychology and social values with his work. Inspired by the events happening in his environment, he creates art with surrealistic imagery that is often allegorical, but is based on real experiences. The use of indigenous symbols (including mainly Adinkra, Uli, Nsibidi) and sometimes foreign symbols, mystical, metaphysical and allegorical imagery are major characteristics of his style of work.

In 2020, Nwaneri participated in artist residency for AKKA Project in Venice, Italy. Laura Tanner

Laura Tanner (b. 1987, Atlanta) received her BFA in Studio Art in 2010 from Florida State University, followed by her MFA in Studio Art in 2013, from University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. Straddling drawing and social practice, Tanner's works act as archives of regional foodways, shedding light on how recipes and traditions surrounding the gathering table reflect regional challenges and inform collective identity. Using a collage-like methodology, Tanner combines archival imagery with imagined compositions inspired by oral histories, gathered through community engagement, to create her interdisciplinary works. Tanner lives in Boca Raton, FL where she is an Associate Professor at Florida Atlantic University.

Highlights and Collections

Laura Tanner’s current project, Dish has received support through numerous grants, awards, and fellowships, including the South Florida Cultural Consortium Award and fellowships from the Hambidge Center for the Creative Arts and Sciences and the Tulane ByWater Institute. Recent commissions include a 30 ft installation at the new Miami-Dade County Courthouse; four site-specific mosaic installations in Palm Beach County as part of the city of Boca Raton’s Centennial celebration; and the Arkansas Museum of Fine Art in Little Rock, Arkansas. In 2023, select drawings were includedin the inaugural Art x Climate section of the fifth National Climate Assessment, a two-part congressionally mandated report by the U.S. Global Change Research Program with a mission to assess the science of climate change and variability and its impacts across the United States, now and throughout this century. Tanner’s work is held in public and private collections internationally, which include, Weatherspoon Art Museum, US; Miami-Dade County Courthouse, US; Wildflower Park, City of Boca Raton, US.
Coady Brown

Coady Brown (b. 1990, Baltimore, MD) received her MFA from Yale University in 2016 and her BFA from Temple University in 2012. She now lives and works in Philadelphia, PA. Brown creates paintings that probe how individuals and groups navigate self-presentation, often within the charged atmosphere of nightlife. Drawing from art history, fashion, film, and lived experience, Brown composes intimate, psychologically rich scenes where colour, light, and gesture hint at mystery, autonomy, and complex human connection. Her work has been exhibited internationally and is held in the collections of the Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami, the Columbus Museum of Art, and the X Museum, Beijing.

Jonny Briggs

Jonny Briggs (b. 1985, London) lives and works in London. In search of lost parts of his childhood, Briggs explores a reality outside of the one he was socialised into by creating new ones using himself and his parents as the main subjects. Briggs uses photography to explore his relationship with deception, the constructed reality of the family, and to question the boundaries between child/adult, self/other, nature/culture, real/fake in attempt to revive the unconditioned self, beyond the family bubble. Although easily assumed to be photoshopped or counterfeit, upon closer inspection the images are often seen to be more real than first expected. Involving staged installations, the cartoonesque and the performative, Briggs looks back to his younger self and attempts to recapture childhood nature through assuming adult eyes.
