Afifa Aleiby

Afifa Aleiby (B.1953) is an Iraqi artist, born in the city of Basra, in the utmost southern part of Iraq. She took up her studies at the Institute of Fine Arts in Baghdad while working as an illustrator for the Iraqi press, before leaving Iraq for the Soviet Union in 1974 to study and specialize in monumental art at the renowned Suikuv Institute in Moscow. Due to the political situation in Iraq, she was unable to return to her native country after the completion of her studies and decided to move to Italy and later back to Moscow, before settling in Yemen to work as a teacher at the Institute of Fine Arts in Aden, where she also illustrated children’s books and magazines. Aleiby has since been living and working in the Netherlands and keeps contributing to a great deal of cultural activities in support or the Iraqi and international democratic movement, in the struggle against terrorism, racism, war and dictatorship. Not having returned to her native country for 35 years, she has built a strong connection to every country she has been living in since leaving Iraq, both in a cultural and personal sense. Her connection to humanity and different cultures has made solidarity transcending geographical and cultural borders an important theme in her work. Bringing together different influences from Renaissance painting to religious icons and social realism, she uses the female figure as a recurring motif to reflect beauty, taste, politics and society.

Rebecca Brodskis

Rebecca Brodskis (b. 1988 in France) lives and works in Paris. She spent most of her childhood travelling and living between France and Morocco. Brodskis studied painting at the Ateliers des Beaux Arts de la Ville de Paris and at Central St. Martins College of Art and Design in London, graduating in 2010. In 2015, she also completed a Master’s degree in Sociology, focusing her research on the themes of vulnerabilities and social crisis. Exploring the borders of the sensible world, Brodskis’ work evolves between conscious and unconscious spaces, leading to a reflection on the existence, the self and the otherness. The idea of being in an in-between is very prominent in Brodskis work, this intermediate space at the cross-roads of empirical reality and imagination, order and disorder, materialism and spirituality, determinism and freedom.

Rabia Farooqui

Rabia Farooqui (b. 1992) is a Karachi based visual artist. She received her BFA from the Indus Valley School of Art and Architecture, Karachi in 2015. Working mainly with the technique of gouache on wasli, Rabia Farooqui explores the links and the tension that exists between traditional and modern practices influenced largely by guidelines already set in stone. In March 2017 she was selected to represent Pakistan in an artist residency by the name of Green Olive Arts, Morocco where she took part in an open studio event along with seven other international artists. Similarly, in April 2018, she participated in another artist residency at Zaratan-Arte Contemporanea in Lisbon, Portugal where she exhibited her work by the end of the residency program.

Nazir Tanbouli

Nazir Tanbouli (b. 1971) is an Egyptian artist based in Cairo. After studying art and design at the School of Fine Art, Alexandria University, Egypt, between 1989-1994, Tanbouli worked on many projects as a painter, muralist, illustrator, and graphic designer, before moving to the UK in 2002. Nazir Tanbouli studied book art and printmaking in 2010 at Camberwell College of Art at University of the Arts London (UAL) and was awarded an MFA. Tanbouli’s work is narrative, biographical, communicative, and often humorous. Both characters and places in his work are a dream like rendering of all the people he knows and all the places he travelled to, yet his works often contain many global themes and symbols which make them both non culturally specific and widely appealing.

Houda Terjuman

Houda Terjuman (B. 1970, Tangier, Morocco) is a Syrian/Swiss/Moroccan visual artist who lives and works in Marrakech. Her artistic practice encompasses paintings and floating sculptures that recalls the language of Surrealism and takes us on a journey throughout the Middle East, Europe and Africa. Terjuman’s work, a reflection of her own multicultural experience of the world, explores identity, displacement and a search for stability. The longing for a home, symbolised by the recurring motif of the tree often juxtaposed with homely pieces of furniture in her paintings or floating uprooted trees in her sculptures, becomes part of a stressful and painful process that reflects the connectivity and heterogeneity of our de-territorialised world.
